Kigezi sub region in South Western Uganda has been affected by the changing climate that has led to increases in rains. Coupled with the rugged mountainous terrain, the rains trigger soil erosion. In addition, the area is also affected by severe land degradation caused by un-sustainable land use practices that have led to fatal and destructive landslides and flooding in the region.

The causes of land degradation in Southwestern Uganda include among others; deforestation, ragged mountainous terrain, lack of vegetation cover, destruction of terraces and mono cropping. This has affected negatively soil quality, crop yields and farming generally as an economic activity. The end result is low crop yields, poor quality agriculture products, and famine leading to encroachment on forest resources through poaching.
