According to BMCT Batwa Census report, 2016, Batwa have had challenges with housing for ages where 47.0% of Batwa live in grass thatched houses and this has had an impact on their social status. Their way of life is characterized by landlessness, makeshift housing facilities, poor sanitation, rampant diseases outbreaks, no means of livelihood,. Poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, and poor infrastructure. The lack of primary health care facilities, along with gender disparity, high incidence of infant mortality, poor maternal health, child undernourishment are additional grave issues for the Batwa.
BMCT developed and designed community based integrated sustainable development program for Kihembe Batwa Settlement with emphasis on: housing, sanitation and livelihood status and specifically focusing on women, children and youths. It includes intervention in hygiene and sanitation, income generating activities, safe drinking water, and protection of the village environment through tree planting.
